There are invitations and then there are warnings that an official invitation will arrive at a future date. The latter, often referred to as ‘save the date cards’, serve as notification of an event for which someone should reserve the time; however, it doesn’t give the details which will be forthcoming with the formal invitation.
Your basic invitation notifies the recipient of an event with the where, what and when answered within the invitation. It’s requesting someone’s presence for a specific reason. There are events, however, which require notification but not the presence of the recipient. Graduation announcements commonly fall into this category.
Some who send out graduation announcements struggle over who should and who should not receive them as they don’t want it to seem like a request for gifts. Also, it’s obvious that not everyone you notify of your child’s graduation can or will come to the graduation. You simply want to share the celebration of this significant milestone with family and friends. Remember this when you receive those graduation announcements—celebrate with them but it doesn’t necessarily mean a gift, just an acknowledgement of the event. Also, don’t ignore the celebration because you aren’t sending a gift.
